Unexplored Destinations of Uttarakhand


Uttarakhand has many tourist spots due to its location in the Himalayas. There are many ancient temples, forest reserves, national parks, hill stations, and mountain peaks that draw large number of tourists. Two of the most holy rivers in Hinduism the Ganges and Yamuna, originate in Uttarakhand. This state has abundant of places, rich with nature which are still untouched and unexplored; here is the list of such places.

The Mystique Valley “LOHAGHAT”

Lohaghat, the scenic town in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand is an unspoilt beauty. It is situated in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. On the bank of river Lohawati, Lohaghat is a unexplored destination of historical and mythological significance in Uttarakhand. One can go for fishing and water sport activities from here to pancheshwar. The sikh shrine Meetha Reetha Sahib, on the way to Nainital and Almora is another tourist attraction.
Set amidst tall range of Deodars and snowy peaks of the Himalayas, Lohaghat is a heaven. The Little Kashmir “Munsyari”

Munsyari is situated in Pithoragarh, the easternmost hill district of Uttarakhand, bordering Tibet, which is known as the ‘Little Kashmir’. The region is a paradise for the nature lovers and the adventurous souls. One can have the breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks, Nanda Devi, Trishuli and panchchuli from here. Munsyari is the base for the trekkers to Milam, Namki, Ralam Glaciers and Nanda Devi peak. A fast developing centre for skiing and other winter sports is Munsyari.
A fairly big & developed Himalayan township is at an altitude of 2290 mtrs. With a population of nearly 1,00,000. Inhabited by the Shanka nomadic tribes from time immemorial, it lies in the trade route to Tibet.

Munsyari, is at the base of the great Himalayan Mountain range and is a starting point of various treks into the interior of the Himalayas. Its name, when translated, refers to a ‘Place with snow’. Situated on the bank of Gori Ganga River, it is a fast growing tourist destination. Glacier enthusiasts, high altitude trekkers and nature lovers’ commonly use it as their hub or base camp. Munsyari also falls on the ancient ‘salt route’from Tibet and is at the entrance of the Johar valley which extends along the path of the Gori Ganga river to its source at Milam Glacier.
Munsyari is at distance of 135 Km from Pithoragarh and 207 Km from Almora. It’s the gateway to the Johar region of inner Himalayas. 

An Enviable Hideaway ‘Dhanaulti’

Dhanaulti is fast emerging as a gem among the travel destinations on Mussoorie – Chamba road, at 2250 mtrs. above the sea level. It comes as a pleasant surprise for the weekend travellers, who find it more peaceful and relaxing. It’s a different experience altogether.
Dhanaulti is away from the crowd, busy market places and pollution. Set amidst thick virgin forest of deodars, Oaks and Rhododendronit’s an ideal location that ensures absolute peace of mind. A Virgin retreat ‘Chakrata’

Chakrata is knonw for it’s pristine beauty. It is situated at an awe-inspiring 700 ft. Above sea level and is only 98 km from Dehradun and 73 km from Mussoorie. A part of this town is a cantonment of the Indian army. The northern part of Chakrata attracts the trakkers and nature lovers with its beautiful landscape, virgin forests of conifers, rhododendron and oak. A vast dense forest, dotted with attraction village of the Jaunsari tribe. The area also includes the 10,000 ft. High peak of Kharamba. On its northern slopes is situated Mundali 9000 ft where from the month of December to march skiers can enjoy skiing.
There are numerous caves and ancient temples near Chakrata which adds the attraction of this secluded hill station. Most of the town region are peaceful, unexploited and unpolluted. 
Tourists can also find many hiking and small treks around Chakrata and few famous waterfalls, Tiger fall being one of them. The alpine meadows of Mundali also offers skiing opportunities during winters.


Gateway of Har-Ki-Dun ‘Purola’

Situated at an altitude of 1,524 mt, 112 km’s from Uttarkashi, Purola is on the way to Har-ki-dun trek and is surrounded by mountain ranges and the Govind Wildlife sanctuary. The park occupies an area of 957.968 sq. km’s. It houses a whole lot of endangered species within its premises with the most important of these being, Snow Leopard.
It is the largest town situated near to Har-Ki-Doon. Har Ki Doon valley is a cradle shaped hanging valley in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is surrounded by snow-covered peaks and alpine vegetation. It is connected to Baspa Valley by the Borasu Pass Purola is surrounded by lush green mountaions and Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. The picturesque view and serene environment of makes Purola an ideal destination to rejuvenate. Purola is untouched by the rapid development of the hill stations and is a quaint little place


A Holy Shrine By The Lake “Hemkund Lokpal”

The high altitude lake Hemkund/Lokpal is situated at the height of 4329 mtrs surrounded by lies in heavenly environs. No modernity no polluting influence from outside, no cars and no other vehicles, you have to reach here walking on your feet. A steep trek from Ghangharia leads one to this holiest spot in about five to six hours. Enriched by seven snow clad peaks and their associated glaciers, this revered shrine reflects its surrounding s on the crystal clear serene waters. The glaciers from Hathi pravat and Saptrishi peaks fills the lake with pristine water and a small stream called Himganga flows out of this celestial lake.

One of the most important pilgrimages for the Hindus and the Sikhs, Hemkund Sahib houses the most revered Sikh Gurudwara and the Lakshman temple built on the bank of the lake. According to the holy Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Govid Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikh faith had meditated on the bank of this lake in one of his earlier births.

This place is also related with the 'Ramayana' hero Lakshman. Its believed that Lakshman meditated by the lake and regained his health after being severely wounded by Meghnad the demon prince. A beautiful temple here bears his name.

The long forgotten Hemkund was later discovered by a Sikh army officer, Sohan Singh and became a major pilgrimage centre only after 1930. Best time to visit this spiritual shrine is from June 1st to Sep 30.

The Heavenly Abode “Harsil”

Harsil is an unspoiled and hidden jewel of Uttarakhand state offering ample scope for people seeking peace and serenity in the lap of Himalayas. It is situated on the bank of Bhagirathi River at an elevation of 2620mts above sea level. Harsil’s beauty is ye unexplored by the travellers It is surrounded by the breathtaking splendour of the Himalayan peaks.
On the way to Gangotri at the distance of 73km from Uttarkashi, this sleepy hamlet offers immaculate beauty of the Himalayas. It is a trekker’s paradise. There are numerous trekking routes around, offering bewitching beauties of nature.
This place is also known as a major apple growing zone. The temperature of Harsil remains pleasant during summers and reaches freezing point during winters. There are Deodar trees in this valley and this region gets lot of Sun light.
Dense Deodar forests, gushing water of Bhagirathi River, chirping birds, salubrious environment and peaceful surrounding are the highlights of this little secluded destination. A holiday at Harsil is a rejuvenating experience where you can do meditation and yoga.


Tribute to a freedom fighter “Udham Singh Nagar”

Udham Singh Nagar was a part of district Nainital before it gained the identity of a separate district in September 1995. The district was named in memory of Late Shri Udham Singh, a great freedom fighter, who killed Michael Adwayar after the brutal Jallianwala Bagh mass murder.
